St Mary's Church, Karori

In September 2024, we had the privilege of working on the foyer of the historic St Mary’s Church - a space that sees high foot traffic and holds great architectural and community significance. Our team approached this project with great care, ensuring that both the structure and the surrounding environment were respected throughout the process.

Protecting the Space

Preparation began with comprehensive floor protection - two layers of protective sheeting across the entire foyer floor. This ensured the original flooring remained untouched throughout the scaffolding setup and preparation & painting stages.

Scaffolding for Safety and Access

Due to the height and complexity of the foyer layout, we installed a ring-lock scaffolding system running centrally through the space. Mobile scaffolds were also positioned on either side to provide full coverage and safe access to all surfaces, while also serving as fall protection. Safety for both our team and the site was a top priority.

Surface Preparation, Timber Repairs & Finishes

Once access was in place, we turned our focus to the extensive timber features throughout the foyer. Every surface was carefully sanded to ensure proper adhesion of new finishes. As part of the prep work, we also carried out a number of minor building repairs which would have been difficult to see or access prior to scaffold set up. The final stage involved applying a combination of paint and stain finishes, tailored to highlight the natural warmth of the timber while complementing the church’s interior character.  A big change!
